In case you haven’t seen the announcement, Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet Foods has merged with Del Monte Foods.
Joey Herrick, president and co-founder of Natural Balance, said all the words you would expect to encourage everyone to be pleased with the merger. Because Del Monte manufactures dog and cat foods with sub-par ingredients, such as Milo’s Kitchen, Kibbles N Bits, Meow Mix and others.
I will watch to see how Del Monte performs in the future. Our Gator currently eats Natural Balance Grain Free Duck & Potato, and I don’t want to see Del Monte cutting any corners with the quality of my dog’s food.
Del Monte, as the manufacturer of Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky Dog Treats that are made in China, is involved in a pending class action law suit filed by a woman who claims her healthy, 7-year-old dog suffered kidney failure after eating Milo’s Chicken Jerky Treats and she subsequently had to euthanize her dog. The lawsuit claims negligence, common law fraud, unjust enrichment, unfair trade, breach of warranty, failure to warn and defective manufacture or design. I don’t know if this lady will win her lawsuit, filed on behalf of many others whose pets suffered after eating the same treat but knowing that Del Monte is responsible for this treat made in China, makes me nervous.
Therefore, I’ll reserve judgment on the merger of Del Monte and Natural Balance and hope for the best. I continue to caution everyone to know who makes your pet food of choice and know where it is manufactured.
