Joan shares her life with Sakamangabe. This once feral black and white kitty was a lucky boy the day that Joan rescued him from the streets of Madagascar.
A career member of the Diplomatic Corp with the United States Foreign Service, Joan has traveled the world. Prompted by President John F. Kennedy’s now-famous declaration, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Rather, ask what you can do for your country,” she began her career with a stint in the Peace Corp, serving in Columbia.
From South America to service with the Red Cross in Viet Nam, to becoming Deputy Director of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in London, Joan lived President Kennedy’s “mantra” well. During her State Department career, she lived in many foreign countries, including Sri Lanka, Japan, Taiwan, Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, The Philippines, and France.
After her stint in Madagascar, Joan’s last tour was 5 years in France, and Sakamangabe moved with her. Now, the pair are retired in Southwest Florida where Joan volunteers with the Ringling Museum. Sakamangabe “spends much of the day overseeing life in the back jungle, from bugs to geckos to raccoons, from his pillow-covered perch on the lanai,” said Joan.
