Meet Harold

September 16, 2012

Harold, who will soon celebrate his 100th birthday, is one of the most interesting men I’ve ever met.  He is a man who spent his entire life “doing” instead of just “being.”    Harold shares his home with his daughter, Jan, and 3 terrific felines.

Sassy arrived after Harold’s friend passed away.  She quickly bonded with her new owner.  Jan brought Victor into the family, and recently, Birdie joined the group.  Sassy and Victor became instant friends but they weren’t as accepting of Birdie.  Time has solved that issue and all three kitties get along well.

Harold spent many years working in various Government agencies, mostly in classified work.  He was involved in the creation of the B-29 bomber, among others.  In Warner Robbins, GA, he participated in designing secret airborne equipment.  Harold’s career took him to many countries, including Italy and Iceland.  He served as a supervisor for disaster relief for the American Red Cross, Director of Census for the city of Baltimore, MD, and was even a Boy Scout Master in Baltimore.  Harold and his late wife raised their children on Long Island, NY.

Today, Harold serves on the Sarasota County Senior Advisory Commission and as the Arts and/or Long Life Learning representative.  He told me a few years ago that his goal is to live to 100, and I’m sure he will do that with his friend, Sassy, right beside him.
